That rattling noise in the basement turned out to be a section of ductwork that had come apart at the seam. After crawling through the crawlspace with a flashlight, I found the tear and used metal tape and a few sheet metal screws to patch it up. The airflow is much better now, and the furnace doesn't have to work as hard.
